OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE A WONDERFUL WAY WITH DRAGONS
Out of My Comfort Zone, A Wonderful Way With Dragons

In dreamland with Alex Deleon.

I am at a major film festival ... maybe in France.

The closing film by Jean Luc Godard is to be shown at a special screening room way down in the bowels of the building.

At the very end Godard who has been breathlessly awaited, finally shows up in person.

His "film" is an exercise in non cinema.

He sits before the screen, for half an hour -- but nothing comes on to the screen. Rien!

Another big. name director is there. He thanks me for mentioning an Obscure incident with Godard that took place in Poland quite a few years ago.

and that was it. The Great Godard shows up at a film festival and presents ....

an instance of le Néant = Nonexistence. Oh well, I ask myself ... was this dream worth "sitting through?"

TIFF Announces Opening and Closing Night Films for the 49th Edition of the Festival

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival will kick off with David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller on September 5, and close with Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut The Deb on September 15, both making their World Premiere at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the Gala programme, sponsored by Dyson.

“This year’s Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded event with highly anticipated films that reflect the world around us with humour and empathy, like our Opening and Closing Night selections, Nutcrackers and The Deb,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “TIFF aims to showcase both returning and first-time directors to the Festival on a big stage, and we are excited for fans to experience these two films — and the many diverse works premiering in between.”

David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers follows strait-laced and work-obsessed Mike (Ben Stiller) as he is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews. Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, The Deb, is an original musical comedy about two teenage cousins who dig deep to find self-acceptance and a date to the Debutante Ball in a small country town in Australia.

Venice Poster by Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo Mattotti

La Biennale di Venezia /

An Elephant in the Lagoon is the image of the official poster

by Lorenzo Mattotti, also creative designer of the opening sequence,

for the 81st Venice International Film Festival

Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo Mattotti is, for the seventh consecutive year, the crea-tive designer of the image for the official poster, which depicts an Elephant in the La-goon, and for the sixth year, of the opening sequence for the Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia, this year in its 81st edition (August 28 – 7 September, 2024).

Lorenzo Mattotti writes: “What is an elephant doing in the Lagoon? It is certainly an unu-sual, unexpected image, but it takes us back in memory to when, many years ago, an ele-phant arrived in Venice and wandered around the narrow Venetian streets during a fa-mous Biennale Carnival in 1981...

This Elephant now crosses the Lagoon and travels the paths of Fantasy, Mystery and Mag-ic that are discovered in Cinema. He himself is a Memory and also the History of Cinema: a party, a parade, a show!

And this specially-coloured Elephant also reminds us of the Exotic, the Faraway, the East, a look towards other civilisations, other cultures...

At the Venice Mostra other worlds, other languages, other fantasies have always met, and have been arriving in the Lagoon for 92 years. An Elephant that goes towards the East, but which has the ability to welcome everyone."

Lorenzo Mattotti lives and works in Paris. He began his career in the late 1970s as a comic artist and in the early 1980s founded the Valvoline group with other illustrators. In 1984 he created Fuochi, which was greeted as an event in the world of comic art, and won im-portant international awards. In cinema, he collaborated in 2004 on Eros by Wong Kar-Wai, Soderbergh and Antonioni, and was responsible for the presentation segments of each episode. He was a creative consultant for Pinocchio by Enzo D'Alò. In Incidenti, Si-gnor Spartaco, Doctor Nefasto, L'uomo alla finestra and many more books, all the way to Stigmate published in Italy by Einaudi, Mattotti's work has evolved following an extremely consistent line. Today his books have been translated around the world. He publishes in newspapers and magazines such as The New Yorker, Le Monde, Das Magazin, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Le Nouvel Observateur, Corriere della Sera and Repubblica. He has illustrated many books for children including Pinocchio and Eugenio, which won the Grand Prix in Bratislava in 1993. He has held many solo exhibitions including an anthological exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, at the Frans Hals museum in Haarlem and at the Musei di Porta Romana. He creates posters, covers, advertising campaigns and is the author of the Cannes 2000 poster and the posters for the Estate Romana festival.

In May 2019, he presented to great acclaim in the Un certain regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, his first animated feature-length film as author and director, entitled La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia (The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily) inspired by the fable by Dino Buzzati. From September 2023 to January 2024, the Lorenzo Mattotti. Stories, rhythms, movements exhibition was held in Brescia, at the Santa Giulia Museum. Currently, original drawings by the artist are on display at the major exhibition on the masters of comics at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, entitled La BD à tous les étages.

Four Ukrainian filmmakers selected for residency at Göteborg Film Festival

Four Ukrainian filmmakers selected for residency at Göteborg Film Festival

For the third summer, a group of Ukrainian filmmakers will spend a few months in Göteborg. The residency program is funded by Region Västra Götaland with contributions from the Film Office, the City of Göteborg, and in collaboration with Företagsbostäder. The selected participants will spend August-September in Göteborg, working on their projects at the Göteborg Film Festival office, and networking with the local film industry.

"Last summer's residency program resulted in, among other things, a film that found a co-producer from Göteborg and premiered at the Berlinale in February; a short film that will soon be shot in Ukraine – and a filmmaker who moved to Göteborg permanently. We are now looking forward to welcoming four new interesting filmmakers to Göteborg, whose projects all deal with dedication and resistance," says Camilla Larsson, Head of Göteborg Film Fund at Göteborg Film Festival.

Introducing the award-winners of the 41st Munich International Film Festival!

A highlight of the 41st Munich International Film Festival was today’s presentation of the awards in the five international competitions (CineCoPro, CineMasters, CineVision, CineRebels, and CineKindl), the FIPRESCI Prize, the Young Jury Award, and the three Audience Awards. The German Cinema New Talent Awards were already presented on Friday evening. The most lucrative prize for German co-producers, the 100,000-euro CineCoPro Award, which is financed by FFF Bayern and was reintroduced this year, went to the film “To a Land Unknown” by Mahdi Fleifel.

All the award-winning films and festival favorites will be screened at the festival theaters on Sunday, July 7 at a reduced ticket price of 9.90 euros.

“Our juries have truly embraced an affirmation of the diversity of global cinema. Meticulous in their artistry, socially relevant, and forward-thinking in their cinematic approach, our winning films show what cinema today can be. Our first Audience Day, which beckons audiences to theaters at reduced admission prices, offers another chance to discover all of these films here at the Munich International Film Festival,” say festival director Christoph Gröner and artistic co-director Julia Weigl.

This summer, the Munich International Film Festival will once again be taking part in KINO AM KÖNIGSPLATZ (July 23 – August 1, 2024) with a lineup of films to be announced shortly.
