Malta’s Mediterrane Film Festival has welcomed the international film community and local cinema lovers to its second edition, which is running from now until 30th June in the enchanting capital of the country, Valetta. The Count of Monte Cristo – which was partly shot in Malta and features in the festival’s Out of Competition selection – had its international premiere last night in the heart of the capital, St George’s Square, kicking off the second edition with an introduction from the festival’s Artistic Director, Teresa Cavina.
Additionally, an Opening Night party was held at the historic Mdina Ditch Gardens – during which the Malta Film Commissioner, Johann Grech, welcomed the international film industry, with him addressing delegates and outlining the festival’s vision and ambitions under this year’s theme of ‘Unity Through Film’ – as well as recognising the country’s rich history and current commitment to building a world-class film industry.
The Count of Monte Cristo is directed by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte. Set in Marseille, 1815, allof young Edmond Dantès’ dreams are about to come true – promoted to ship’s captain he can finally marry the love of his life, Mercedes. But his success inspires jealousy from various quarters. Betrayed by his rivals and denounced as a member of a pro-Bonaparte conspiracy, he is imprisoned without trial at the Château d’If, with no hope of return.
After fourteen years of secret instruction by fellow inmate Abbé Faria, Dantès manages to escape and to get hold of the legendary treasure hidden on the isle of Monte Cristo. Now with a huge fortune, he hatches an extraordinary plan to exact the vengeance he craves. Assuming multiple identities – The Count of Monte Cristo among them – Dantès first courts his enemies, now highly placed dignitaries, the better to strike them down. But the price of revenge is heavy for one’s soul.
The Count of Monte Cristo was shot in key locations across Malta, including Birgu Waterfront and Marsa Wharf. Local Maltese talent who worked across the film’s production – including the producers Pierre Ellul and Anika Psaila Savona, along with many of the crew – attended the screening.

Fresh from the film’s debut in Cannes, we were delighted to celebrate so many of the makers behind this project at our screening – creating a film on any scale takes a village and opening night truly embodied the theme of our festival: Unity Through Film.”

The Mediterrane Film Festival programme will present 15 films in its Competition, seven Out of Competition film, seven films competing in its environment-themed Mare Nostrum section, topped up by 14 immersive projects selected by interactive story architect Michel Reilhac.
Additionally, a series of panels and masterclasses featuring industry experts from around the world will be held – covering topics ranging from globalisation in the entertainment industry, film circulation and co-production among Mediterranean countries and beyond, emerging storytelling trends, immersive technologies and the animation landscape, to career-specific discussions hosted by acclaimed experts in their respective fields and crafts.
