Porto Femme: 7th edition RECAP

RECAP 7TH EDITION
Highlights from Porto Femme 7th edition.

Porto Femme is a festival of people, and it is because of each one of you that we continue to grow and celebrate cinema.

We appreciate the fact that you are there for us and your continuous support. This edition was fruit of revolutions, and we can't wait to share what is to come with you.

In the meantime, we would like to highlight some moments of the festival.

Of the activities parallel to the competitive sessions, we would like to highlight the tribute to Margarida Cardoso.

Margarida Cardoso was the filmmaker tributed on this year's edition. We invited her for an informal conversation with Kitty Furtado after the screening of "Understory" signed by her.

THIS YEAR'S SPECIAL PROGRAMS...

Thank you to Luísa Sequeira, Rita Capucho, Maria Luna-Rassa and Janaína Oliveira for bringing us a curated program about different women and their revolutions.

From women with cameras in hand we met indigenous cinema and celebrated love in conversations with the curators and our partners at FEMGlocal.

In addition to the prizes awarded to the competitive sessions, the "WOMEN'S FIGHTS AND RIGHTS" prizes were awarded, distinguishing Sandra Román's Bald Women (2023) as the best film related to women's rights; the "SORORIDADE" prize honored the It Gets Better Portugal cultural association for its distinguished social intervention work and, in partnership with Galerias Mira, the "WOMEN'S VOICE" was given to Maria Mire's Clandestina (2023); distinguishing it as the best national film independent of the competition categories.

In this edition we were also able to count on more than 1500 people who attended and participated in the festival's film screening, more than 1,000 people who took part in the parallel activities and more than 70 people from the film industry attended the festival, from more than 10 countries - Brazil, China, Croatia, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Iraq, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Russia.

AND THESE... WERE THE WINNERS!

"Woodland" is a smart and sharp achievement that, through excellent photography, plunges us into the deep forest of trauma, terrorism, the clash between urban and rural worlds, violence against women in rural settings, and silences. And through exceptional acting by the actresses, it shows us the power of healing in the encounter with nature, friendship, and community.

Uli, Mariana Gil Ríos

A brilliant achievement that addresses in an original way the subjects of childhood, freedom, and gender as a social construct. It's a new, complex, ecofeminist cinematic vision of alliance between species. A film of rare beauty.

Special Mentions Short Film
The voice of others, Fatima Kaci, France, 2023
Tria, de Giulia Grandinetti, Italy, 2022

Prague's Girl, Andree Lucini

Digging into family memories is always a challenging task. The jury awards the Best Documentary prize to 'Prague's Girl,' by Andree Lucini, for the subtle and heartfelt manner in which it reconstructs part of the life journey of her grandparents, avoiding the reductionism of their idiosyncrasies and choices.

Special Mention Documentary
Daisy, Catalina Kulczar, EUA, 2023

Green Grass, Eli Augarten

It is with an impressionistic elegance that this film cleverly uses traditional animation techniques as an effective tool for dealing with a dense and traumatic subject.

Special Mention Animation
Nyanga, Medhin Tewolde Serrano, México, 2023

The Altar, Moe Myat

Delicate and elegant discourse on power and guilt, in an intimate and confessional format, reinforced by its esthetic composition, as dreamy as sober.

Special Mention Experimental
This story to exist, Pauline Moussours, França, 2023

Entre a Luz e o Nada, Joana de Sousa

The narrative construction, in dialogue with the search for identity and the cosmos itself, reconciling it with a risky and coherent cinematic language.

Special Mention Short Film
Vapor, Susana Abreu, 2023

As Melusinas à Margem do Rio, Melanie Pereira

Intimate, creative film with strong visual solutions and a well-constructed narrative. The use of archival footage and voice-over work effectively alongside conversations with various women, exploring uncertain identities and bringing new perspectives to the subject of emigration.

Special Mention Documentary
Dildotectónica, Tomás Paula Marques, 2023

Sopa Fria, Marta Monteiro

The film addresses a highly relevant social issue, that of domestic violence, portrayed subtly and metaphorically, representing the invisibility of this public problem.

Special Mention Animation
O Senhor do Porto, Tânia Marques, 2023

Cura #1, Joana Peralta

An original and well-shot piece, which poetically brings forth the feminine and ancestral universe, approaching motherhood, both individual and collective.

Thread Tension, Ruby Mastrodimos

An intense and dystopian look at the pressures and demands placed on women in the workplace and on the effectiveness of resistance and unity. We highlight the quality of the imagery and the immersive sound.

Special Mention Short Film
Transgression, Diana Szczotka, Polónia, 2023

Getty Abortions, Franzis Kabisch

Innovative and creative gaze that resorts to new digital technologies to, in a game of critical research, scrutinize and question the hegemonic discourses surrounding the representation of women and abortion.

Special Mention Documentary
Prisas, Angélica María Torres Tamayo, Colômbia, 2023

All Good, Diana Acién Manzorro

A confinement story filled with humor, extremely well executed in terms of aesthetics and technical aspects.

Three Secret Clues of Longing, Zhenia Kazankina

A sequencing of geometries among bodies, gestures, sensations, and memories.

Special Mention Experimental
Land Song, Inês Ariana Pereira, Portugal 2023

Sew to say, Rakel Aguirre

The film portrays the complexity of the struggle for peace and the end of nuclear war, focusing on the figure of Thalia, her art, and her personal story. Additionally, the film addresses the theme through feminist unity and maternal concern for future generations.

Special Mention Thematic
Saint Gregory, Nataša Nelević, Montenegro, 2023

Alice and the sunflowers, Charlotte Muller & Théo Degen

A beautiful film about the discovery of love and sexuality, in dialogue with the cycles of nature and the finitude of all things.

As Gaivotas Cortam o Céu, Mariana Bártolo e Guillermo García López, Portugal, 2023
