The jury of the 24th mBank New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw awarded the Grand Prix and €10,000 prize to Explanation for Everything (Magyarázat mindenre), directed by Gábor Reisz.

Explanation for Everything, dir. Gábor Reisz

A clever treatment to a story exploring polarization in society, starting with present day Hungary yet easily resonating to the world that we all know. This film’s power seemingly comes from the fact that it was made out of true urgency, nonetheless it successfully reminds us that the best way to address complexity is through simplicity, according to the jury comprising Rodrigo Moreno (Grand Prix winner for The Delinquents at the 23rd NH), Anthony Lapia (honorable mention winner for After at the 23rd NH), Jan P. Matuszyński (director of Minghun), Kasia Smutniak (actress, director of Walls) and Ann Oren (author of Piaffe).

OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE A WONDERFUL WAY WITH DRAGONS
Out of My Comfort Zone, A Wonderful Way With Dragons

In dreamland with Alex Deleon.

I am at a major film festival ... maybe in France.

The closing film by Jean Luc Godard is to be shown at a special screening room way down in the bowels of the building.

At the very end Godard who has been breathlessly awaited, finally shows up in person.

His "film" is an exercise in non cinema.

He sits before the screen, for half an hour -- but nothing comes on to the screen. Rien!

Another big. name director is there. He thanks me for mentioning an Obscure incident with Godard that took place in Poland quite a few years ago.

and that was it. The Great Godard shows up at a film festival and presents ....

an instance of le Néant = Nonexistence. Oh well, I ask myself ... was this dream worth "sitting through?"

“This year’s Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded event with highly anticipated films that reflect the world around us with humour and empathy, like our Opening and Closing Night selections, Nutcrackers and The Deb,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “TIFF aims to showcase both returning and first-time directors to the Festival on a big stage, and we are excited for fans to experience these two films — and the many diverse works premiering in between.”

David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers follows strait-laced and work-obsessed Mike (Ben Stiller) as he is suddenly thrust into being a caregiver for his rambunctious, orphaned nephews. Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, The Deb, is an original musical comedy about two teenage cousins who dig deep to find self-acceptance and a date to the Debutante Ball in a small country town in Australia.

Venice Poster by Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo Mattotti

La Biennale di Venezia /

An Elephant in the Lagoon is the image of the official poster

by Lorenzo Mattotti, also creative designer of the opening sequence,

for the 81st Venice International Film Festival

Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo Mattotti is, for the seventh consecutive year, the crea-tive designer of the image for the official poster, which depicts an Elephant in the La-goon, and for the sixth year, of the opening sequence for the Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia, this year in its 81st edition (August 28 – 7 September, 2024).

Lorenzo Mattotti writes: “What is an elephant doing in the Lagoon? It is certainly an unu-sual, unexpected image, but it takes us back in memory to when, many years ago, an ele-phant arrived in Venice and wandered around the narrow Venetian streets during a fa-mous Biennale Carnival in 1981...

This Elephant now crosses the Lagoon and travels the paths of Fantasy, Mystery and Mag-ic that are discovered in Cinema. He himself is a Memory and also the History of Cinema: a party, a parade, a show!

And this specially-coloured Elephant also reminds us of the Exotic, the Faraway, the East, a look towards other civilisations, other cultures...

At the Venice Mostra other worlds, other languages, other fantasies have always met, and have been arriving in the Lagoon for 92 years. An Elephant that goes towards the East, but which has the ability to welcome everyone."

Lorenzo Mattotti lives and works in Paris. He began his career in the late 1970s as a comic artist and in the early 1980s founded the Valvoline group with other illustrators. In 1984 he created Fuochi, which was greeted as an event in the world of comic art, and won im-portant international awards. In cinema, he collaborated in 2004 on Eros by Wong Kar-Wai, Soderbergh and Antonioni, and was responsible for the presentation segments of each episode. He was a creative consultant for Pinocchio by Enzo D'Alò. In Incidenti, Si-gnor Spartaco, Doctor Nefasto, L'uomo alla finestra and many more books, all the way to Stigmate published in Italy by Einaudi, Mattotti's work has evolved following an extremely consistent line. Today his books have been translated around the world. He publishes in newspapers and magazines such as The New Yorker, Le Monde, Das Magazin, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Le Nouvel Observateur, Corriere della Sera and Repubblica. He has illustrated many books for children including Pinocchio and Eugenio, which won the Grand Prix in Bratislava in 1993. UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD:

HAPPY 60th ANNIVERSARY TO THE TRAM BACK LOT TOUR!

By Emmanuel Itier.

Since 1964, Universal Studios Hollywood, has been offering visitors, with the back lot tour, an amazing magical glimpse at what is going on in the studios and how movies are made. Since the 60’s over 200 million visitors were able to fall under the spell of Universal Studios and be part of the dreamlike journey through the making of so many iconic movies. This year, the public will have a chance to step off the tram and to visit the set of the ‘Psycho’ legendary Bates Motels with a very “close” encounter with Norman Bates. You will then, be able to take a picture with the shark from Jaws as well as with some muscle cars from ‘Fast and Furious’ and even have a cool selfie with King Kong! This truly adds a fun twist to the regular back lot tour that includes the amazing 3D experience of ‘King Kong’ and of ‘Fast and Furious’.

The Federation of Film Academies Europe (FACE) just launched

European Film Academies Join Forces in Federation
On 11 July 2024, the European Film Academy and Film Academies of 20 countries have gathered in Luxembourg founding the Federation of Film Academies Europe (FACE), a pan-European film body, officially registered in Luxembourg.

The Federation emerged from a desire to formalize the relationships between these academies, which have been collaborating since 2006 through the Film Academy Network Europe, organised by the European Film Academy. Members of this network, all of whom are bodies presenting their respective national or regional film awards and the European Film Awards – have been meeting regularly in order to share insights and developments, and to develop ideas for joint activities to promote European cinema, join efforts to integrate diversity, inclusion and sustainability into their work, and to strengthen collaboration on film education and audience development within Europe.
