Explanation for Everything by Gábor Reisz wins Grand Prix at the 24th mBank New Horizons IFF in Wroclaw

The jury of the 24th mBank New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw awarded the Grand Prix and €10,000 prize to Explanation for Everything (Magyarázat mindenre), directed by Gábor Reisz.

Explanation for Everything, dir. Gábor Reisz

A clever treatment to a story exploring polarization in society, starting with present day Hungary yet easily resonating to the world that we all know. This film’s power seemingly comes from the fact that it was made out of true urgency, nonetheless it successfully reminds us that the best way to address complexity is through simplicity, according to the jury comprising Rodrigo Moreno (Grand Prix winner for The Delinquents at the 23rd NH), Anthony Lapia (honorable mention winner for After at the 23rd NH), Jan P. Matuszyński (director of Minghun), Kasia Smutniak (actress, director of Walls) and Ann Oren (author of Piaffe).

Gábor Reisz is a Hungarian director, screenwriter, composer, editor, and actor born in 1980. He graduated from the Faculty of Humanities at Eötvös Loránd University and also studied at the University of Theater and Film Arts in Budapest. His feature-length debut, For Some Inexplicable Reason, was a commercial success in Hungary. Bad Poems won awards at several international festivals. His latest film, Explanation for Everything, won the Orizzonti competition in Venice, as well as a Golden and Silver Hugo Award in Chicago.

Festival viewers also chose their winner. The Audience Award went to Luna Carmoon for Hoard. Thanks to the New Horizons Association, the film will soon be available in regular theatrical distribution.

This year’s Shortlist section award went to Mariusz Rusiński for Sister of Mine. The winner of the Zuzanna Jagoda Kolska Award was selected from among filmmakers under the age of 30. The jury, comprising members of the New Horizons Association and the chairman of the board of directors of the Zuzanna Jagoda Kolska Foundation (co-founder of the award), praised the film for the unique combination of subtlety and courage with which the director portrayed a difficult moment in the lives of those closest to him, who before our eyes are gaining honesty, redefining their own relationships and rediscovering a lost sense of closeness.
