Film Fest Gent presents album 'Elliot Goldenthal: Music for Film'

Film Fest Gent proudly presents Elliot Goldenthal: Music for Film, the film festival’s 2024 album with all-new studio recordings of selected scores by Elliot Goldenthal, performed by Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Film Fest Gent music director Dirk Brossé. 

American composer Elliot Goldenthal has made a tremendous contribution to the art of film and theatre music. After broadening his artistic horizon from the concert hall to the big screen in the 1980s, he has written music for nearly forty films and has been rewarded with numerous awards and accolades, among these four Academy Award nominations including one win for Frida, three Golden Globe nominations including one win for Frida and three World Soundtrack Awards. Known for his unique mix of techniques, genres and styles, Goldenthal has set an example for future generations of composers. His fusion of orchestral music with jazz, rock and electronic music and his delicate use of ethnic elements has resulted time and again in compelling soundtracks that were ahead of its time.

This album does not only include music from Goldenthal’s most celebrated score for Julie Taymor’s Frida (2002), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score (and nomination for Best Original Song), a Golden Globe and two World Soundtrack Awards, but also features two concert suites, recorded for the very first time. The Grand Gothic Suite includes highlights from his Grammy-nominated score for Batman Forever (1995) and his never commercially released score for Batman & Robin (1997). Dedicated to yet another peak in his career, the suite Final Fantasia celebrates his music for Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001). Further titles include a suite from David Fincher’s Alien³ (1992), his ASCAP-award winning music for Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) (Academy Award nomination 1995) and a selection from his score for Jordan’s Michael Collins (1996) (Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe nomination 1997). Other highlights are a theme from Michael Mann’s Public Enemies (2009) as well as a fragment from his Satellite Award-nominated score for Heat (1995). Honouring his flourishing collaboration with director Julie Taymor, Goldenthal’s life partner, the album closes with the compelling Finale from Titus (1999).

Released during the 51st edition of Film Fest Gent in October 2024 and licensed to Silva Screen Records, the album Elliot Goldenthal: Music for Film is the 19th title in Film Fest Gent’s continuing series of annual film music albums, containing new studio recordings with Brussels Philharmonic and Dirk Brossé that give some of the world’s greatest scores an extended afterlife beyond the films. Previous recordings feature the work of Craig Armstrong, Angelo Badalamenti, Marco Beltrami, Terence Blanchard, Carter Burwell, Mychael Danna, Cliff Martinez, Mark Isham, Laurence Rosenthal, Alan Silvestri, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Shigeru Umebayashi and Gabriel Yared.
